REVIEW: Honmono Sushi

Discover the most grand and unique sushi place in Bangkok!
I’ve been quite a sushi fan lately and have been hunting for authentic Japanese restaurants in Bangkok. See my previous blog on Kabocha Sushi at: atomptr.home.blog/review-kabocha-sushi
After doing some researches on Japanese places in Bangkok, I’ve came across ‘Honmono Sushi’ – the most unique and grand Japanese restaurant I have ever been to.
There are several branches on Honmono Sushi around the city of Bangkok, from the ones in big malls to stand alone branches around the corner.
Branches:
Siam Paragon | opens at 11:00AM
Central World | opens at 11:00AM
Central Plaza Grand Rama9 | opens at 11:00AM
Thonglor 23 | opens at 11:30AM

Let’s not waste anymore time and get going! From the researches and reviews on the internet, a lot of people have been complaining about the service and taste at the Siam Paragon branch, whereas the branch at Thonglor 23 have been receiving positive feedbacks. So, obviously we went to the Thonglor 23 branch to play safe.
After a long drive and being able to pass through all the traffic on Thonglor road, we have finally reached the restaurant. From the front of Thonglor 23, drive further in the soi and on your left hand side there will be a traditional looking Japanese restaurant standing.. and there it is! your ‘Honmono Sushi Restaurant’
IMG_1231
Honmono Sushi at the Thonglor 23 branch has only one concern which is their location. It is not located anywhere near public transportation such as BTS or MRT, unlike the other branches in the malls. There is not a lot of parking spaces available as well as we all know sois in Thonglor is very narrow and the restaurant is not at all very huge.
Apart from the concern the branch at Thonglor 23 is very well served! From the decorations, services and of course the quality of their ingredients. Although the branches in the malls are easier to get to but the environment and atmosphere at the Thonglor 23 branch is on the opposite of those in the malls. This branch has a very unique decorations among all the other branches and gives the most Japanese feelings to the customers.
After you are seated and have ordered your meal, the complimentary appetizers will be served – most of the time just pickles and Japanese seaweeds.
IMG_1235
Honmono Sushi is just like its name, known for serving sushi. They have claimed that their fishes and ingredients are imported from the two biggest fish markets in Japan: Tsukiji Fish Market and Osaka Fish Market. Therefore, the freshness and quality is guaranteed.
There are a variety of sushi to choose from, and even the unique fishes are serves here! The ones Honmono Sushi recommend the most would be their “foie gras” or what we all know as liver. There is no doubt that this menu is their signature due to its perfectly grilled and all the saucing combined.
Apart from foie gras sushi the other fishes are also a must try! For today I have ordered various type of fishes to try out from eel and engawa, and also the basic fishes such as tuna and salmon.
IMG_1233
Other than sushi Honmono also serves actual meal that comes in a set with sides of Japanese appetizers such as miso soup and fermented vegetables. As of today our aim is only for the sushi therefore we did not checked out any other meals. But you can still always find their menu of their webpage and social media sites at:
Honmono Sushi restaurant is a grand and elegant Japanese restaurant in the city area of Bangkok, with high quality ingredients being served, meaning the price of it is not inexpensive but is reasonable comparing the quality you will get for this price. For each meal at Honmono Sushi it will cost you around THB1000-1500+++ depending on which type of product you’ve ordered.
IMG_1231
Even though the price seems to high and unreachable for some, Honmono offers discount and special offers all the time. There are always discount season from 50% to 80% and there is even more on-top discount for some credit cards according to the banks. Before planning a trip to Honmono you could pay their pages a visit to catch up on the offers so that you would not have to miss a chance on their sales!
From trying many Japanese restaurants around in Bangkok I have to say Honmono is not at all a bad choice for Japanese food lovers and especially sushi lovers! People who have desire for sushi should come here at least for once! I would give Honmono a 8/10 – the taste is nice, the atmosphere was the best and the quality is equivalent to sushi in Japan.

REVIEW Kabocha Sushi

Tsukiji Market

Also known as the world biggest market for fresh fishes and seafoods. Tsukiji is in the capital city of Japan, Tokyo, and how is it relating to today’s blog on Kabocha Sushi restaurant? Well, Kabocha Sushi restaurant imported all their ingredients and fishes from Tsukiji! and made their menu throughly by Japanese chefs. They imported their fishes in every month meaning it claims their products are always fresh, and if not they will immediately exchange to a new one their customer.

Kabocha Sushi

Thailand’s freshest sushi and sashimi place, Kabocha Sushi includes many branches here in Bangkok: Ladprao 19, The Street Ratchada, Homepro Rama9 and in Rama2. Although their most recommended branch would be the one in Ladprao 19 because of its extraordinary design and is the only stand-alone branch they own.

IMG_1769Kabocha Sushi branch in Ladprao 19 is very convenient for both customers traveling by public transport and customers with private cars as there at a MRT station or in other word an underground train station nearby the restaurant, and the restaurant itself has a parking lot available up in the building although the parking spaces is quite narrow and recommended to park outside along the road more. People who are coming by underground train are most likely to take the advantage by not having to face the traffic on Ladprao’s road, because as most Bangkokian knows, Ladprao’s traffic is literally hell on earth especially during lunch and dinner time.

Coming to Kabocha Sushi restaurant you do not have to make a reservation in advance, unlike most of the Japanese restaurants in Bangkok, because Kabocha Sushi has plenty of available seats for every customers. Not to say that Kabocha Sushi does not have many visitors but that the restaurant provides up to 50-60 seats which can definitely hold up to every customers visiting, not including seats at the counter bar where the chefs makes food too.

After the waiter seated you and placed your order, they will bring out complimentary snacks for you to start with. In this case the complimentary snacks are often dried fish or edamame, which is the Japanese green peas with salt. The snacks are free of charge and is available to refill at any time throughout your meal as well. However, customers who holds the membership card of Kabocha Sushi will receive the spicy salmon salad as their complimentary appetizer instead, and on your birth month you will receive more complimentary snacks for instance salmon sashimi which normally will cost you roughly around 200-300 baht.

Sashimi and Sushi

IMG_1768Kabocha Sushi serves variety of sashimi and sushi, not just the basic Salmon and Tuna fishes where it sells at every Japanese restaurant but there are heap tons of other exclusive fishes and menus like Engawa, Uni and Foei Gras. There sashimi comes in a bowl of ice and is sliced into beautiful looking pieces. Each slices of the raw fishes are thick and fresh, very reasonable for the price indeed.

For today, I ordered the salmon sashimi to try out. In the bowl it comes in three different type of salmon sashimi altogether, the basic raw salmon, the fatty part of salmon with ikura on top and half-grilled salmon sashimi with sauce on top. In this dish I personally like the half-grilled salmon best as its not as fishy as the others and the sauce tasted not too extra, it is more like a mustard to be cleared.

IMG_1770Coming to the sushi I have ordered 2 dishes of sushi altogether. The first one is salmon role with avocado and salmon on top with seasoning sauce. To begin with, there are two sauces that were dripped on top of the rolls, one tasted creamy and more savory, and the other tasted more towards the sweetness. The sushi itself is just salmon with avocado wrapped in seaweed and Japanese rice then rolled over in salmon roes, it was not that extra of the taste but it has this salmon taste which really stand out.

The second sushi dish I ordered is the tempura sushi. Comparing this dish to the salmon roll, I personally like this one more. It looked basic like the normal sushi, shrimp wrapped with tempura flour then another layer of rice and seaweed, and again topped with salmon roe. From the look of it it looks like something plain and bland but with the tempura flour, it added something to the menu. It turned the normal shrimp roll to something more crunchy and had a texture to it.

IMG_1767Each dish here at Kabocha Sushi cost around 300-1000 baht depending on the menu you ordered. The Salmon and Tuna would be roughly around 300-400 baht according to what you picked, but the more exclusive fishes are more expensive. This price does not include the service charge of 10% and VAT just yet, so roughly a meal here at Kabocha Sushi would cost around 1500-2000 baht altogether.

REVIEW: On The Table

On The Table

One of the restaurants famous in big malls here in Thailand, On The Table called itself a japanese cafe with all the fusion japanese/western food it serves. The food at On The Table are mostly mixture of japanese ingredients into western dishes, such as Salmon Pizza.

E0673C54-0358-4292-95BF-AD2846298E2D

Just like the other restaurants in the malls, the price here are in an affordable range at 200-500Baht not including 7% of VAT and service charge. There are obviously variety of menu of foods and drinks to choose from, from sushi, salad, pizza, steak, spaghetti and rice. And for the drinks, there are many type of drinks such as italian soda, smoothie and iced drinks.

Salad

B4788BB1-B9D7-4D88-B7FB-78A4DF20F1BDTo start off the meal I chose to order the avocado and strawberry salad to share with the rest of the people as an side dish. This avocado and strawberry salad is basically fresh salad vegetables on top with slice of avocados and strawberries, then finished off with white sesame sauce. Surprisingly, the taste of avocado and strawberry went well together although they were no specific taste to it but still is a great menu to cut off the heavy taste from other dishes.

Rice

9696EF04-3FE0-4F29-9847-986ADC7A313CThere are many type of rice dishes here at On The Table, and for today I have ordered three rice dishes; curry rice, fried rice and sashimi rice (sashimi don). Beginning with the curry rice, different from the ones at other restaurants, this one serves with omelette, fried pork and fermented tomatoes. The vegetables and meats in the curry comes in a big chuck which made the overall of the taste goes perfectly well unlike the one elsewhere where there’s mostly just the curry sauce and rice.

On to the fried rice, the fried rice dish I ordered today is the one that comes with salmon teriyaki. The menu of this dish is called Salmon Teriyaki Fried Rice. And for the fried rice itself, it contains slices of mushrooms, carrots chopped in cubes and other spring vegetables. The taste of it is just like the typical fried rice but with the salmon it made the taste of the rice better. This dish would be great for kids as there are no spice added and the overall taste was quite bland, and the kids would get vitamin from vegetables and protein from the fish as well.5108E192-69C1-4CB0-BBA5-B648C0616174

Sashimi rice, or as known as Sashimi Don, is a bowl of rice with variety type of raw fishes chopped in cube on top. In this dish the sashimi contains the basic salmon, tuna, crab stick, tago (squid) and ikura (salmon eggs), then sprinkled with japanese seaweeds and bean sprouts. There comes a seasoning sauce served along with the dish which highly recommended to be mix in with the rice otherwise the taste would be too plain. The fishes weren’t as great as the ones in authentic japanese restaurant but not as bad for the one in the malls.

Pizza

The pizza that might as well be there signature dish of the restaurant is the Smoked Salmon with Spinach pizza, although there are many more types such as mushrooms, hams and vegetables. The pizza here comes in a small serving and thin layer of dough which you could probably finish one slice in just 3-4 bites, unlike the ones in the typical fast food place.

The salmon came in a big slice that could almost cover up the slice of the pizza and with a slice of onion, and the spinach is placed in the middle more like for a decoration. I find it best to eat the spinach along with the pizza otherwise there would be just the taste of salmon and dough. There are not a big layer of cheese but just a tint of it and tomato sauce here.

Spaghetti

59FB9CB4-4C39-4D95-BE80-9D69B4CD22EASame with the pizza, there are many types of spaghettis you could choose from. From creamy sauce, the original tomato sauce, and dried asian style spaghetti. Today I’ve decided to chose the dried spaghetti with fried pork, fried chilli, and basils. Or as known as Spaghetti Pad Kee Mao here in Thailand. The spaghetti was seasoned with oil and pepper giving it the lightly spice flavor and the fried pork were amazing. It is not too spicy as for the chilli they used is the fried chilli, so they were more to just add the color to the dish.

There are no need of reservation, you could just walk-in and start your meal right away. Also, if you live in an area where there is unlikely a mall to be found, On The Table offers a delivery through Food Panda application as well. If you want to check out more of their menus and informations you could visit onthetabletokyocafe.com, or call to the specific branch.

REVIEW: Vertigo TOO

Vertigo TOO

From a successful rooftop restaurant, Vertigo, to a more casual restaurant – Vertigo TOO. Although Vertigo TOO is not on a rooftop, it is located high up on the 60th floor of Banyan Tree Hotel and still allow you to see the city of Bangkok through it’s window.

Vertigo and Vertigo TOO?IMG_9035

Vertigo TOO is a restaurant opened after the success of Vertigo. Of course, Vertigo is located on a rooftop where you can enjoy better view at night but Vertigo TOO offers you to see the view in a more peaceful atmosphere.

City of Bangkok

Vertigo TOO is decorated with glass window, allowing you to see the famous Chao Phraya River and the city of Bangkok in general where there’s lights and sounds. From the restaurant you can see temples, buildings, public transportation and more – a great atmosphere indeed.

Where is Vertigo TOO?

Vertigo TOO is locating in Banyan Tree Hotel, on the 60th floor. To be exact, Banyan Tree Hotel is in Sathorn Road in Bangkok, which is one of the major roads. The easy way to get there is either by taking sky train (BTS) to Lumpini Station or take the underground train (MRT) to Saladaeng Station.

IMG_9036Inside The Restaurant

Vertigo TOO is a mixture of restaurant and bar. Not only does it provides great food but there are also cocktails and live music streaming inside. The restaurant is decorated in a modern and unique style with the arched ceiling and golden red lights hanging from the top, mimicking a starry night. Also, there are the many type of seats to choose from; sofas, tables and bars. The sofa seats are a recommendation as it is right along both side of the windows with pleasing scenario.

Bar and Restaurant

The cuisine is a mixture of Western and Asia tapas, meaning their dishes has both flavor of the Western and Asian, for example the fried squid are served with the hot Sriracha sauce. For being a tapas cuisine, most of the dishes here comes in a small potion or bite sized food.

IMG_9037

Even their main menu comes in a small potion. Such as the Salmon Steak which has been served with seasoned vegetables; tomatoes, potatoes and cucumbers. The salmon itself has been imported therefore the quality is guaranteed high, and has been grilled with pepper and parsley.

Back to the start, there will be appetizer to start off. The cocktail shrimp with radish and garlic served in a cocktail glass with hot sauce and decorate vegetables. This appetizer has a tint of spiciness to it from the sauce, which is most likely the Sriracha ones, and the fresh seafood taste of the shrimp.

IMG_9038

The bar – variety of cocktails to choose from and each of their drinks are mixed by the popular mixologist that creates a signature taste to it. Their signature cocktail is the Sangria Lovers, a Cabernet Sauvignon red wine based cocktail and has a sweet and sour taste to it.

Vertigo TOO On a Weekend

Apart from being a bar and restaurant at night, Vertigo TOO offers afternoon tea on weekends as well. The afternoon tea set includes the typical bite sized snacks; sandwiches and pastries, and also champagne. This set cost 880 Baht in total and an addition price of 1299 Baht for ‘Moet & Chandon’ champagne. Unfortunately the afternoon tea only offers on weekends but is available from 13:00 to 17:00, which is a high amount of time.

Services and Facilities

Vertigo TOO is in the city area of Bangkok therefore there are many public transportation to choose from to get there, and for its being located in a highly ranked hotel the service is obviously great. Even though there are hotel staffs always servicing you but the waiters in the restaurant itself does not quite do the job which is probably there are not enough waiters in this huge restaurant. It is opened everyday from 18:00 to 01:00 which is a time for late night dinner.

img_9033.jpg

Moreover, if you are interested in coming to Vertigo TOO you might want to reserve a table in advance to get the best seat and guarantee that you will not miss a chance. Simply call 0-2679-1200 in order to make a reservation.

Vertigo TOO is a great place to relax after a long day at work or just to hangout in general. Most people come here to celebrate birthdays or even for date nights. It is obviously not a place to casually come for a meal as the price is quite expensive and has to make a reservation ahead of time but is a place people would most likely spend their special day at with all the amazing view and atmosphere.

Location: Banyan Tree Hotel, Sathorn Road, 60th Floor

Brown, Brew & Bistro

The Modern Restaurant in Pranburi

Thailand, a country based in South-East Asia, has been well known for its beautiful beach scenarios and their foods. In today’s blog, I will talk about a place that combines these two advantages together – a place with amazing food located in a calming beach. Most of the beautiful beaches in Thailand are located in the Southern area, but today I will show you another beach you can easily go from the city and has amazing view as well.

Brown, Brew & Bistro, a restaurant in Pranburi. Pranburi is a province in Thailand next to Huahin, one of the most popular beaches for weekend getaway, and is only a few hours away from the capital city, Bangkok. You can simply drive their from the city or there are now many public transportations that you could use for example the shuttle bus from the Airport that takes you to Huahin then you could grab a cab straight to Pranburi as it is right next to each other.

In this restaurant, not only that there are main dishes but they also serves coffees and drinks as well. The atmosphere of the restaurant is made up of mostly wood and brick textures, and uses the basic colors such as black and white for their furniture. The color combination has made the restaurant warm and cozy which is a perfect place for people to hang out. The restaurant also has some vintage aesthetic by using fake flowers and putting coffee beans in a jar to decorate their place as well, making it feel homier. Talking about the interior design and furniture, with Brown, Brew & Bistro you do not have to worry about reservations or not having seats because they provide ton of tables and there are even counter bar seats for people who come here solo.

Not only does the interior of this restaurant will make you feel chilly but also if you look out the window you will see the view of the beach right away as the location of the restaurant is right next to the beach. The benefit of this restaurant being located in Pranburi is that Pranburi is not a very famous beach for both tourists and locals itself therefore the beach in Pranburi is extra clean compared to its neighbor, Huahin. There are no litters being thrown on the sand at all but the water might not be as blue as the beach in the Southern part of Thailand such as Phuket though and might not have as much attractions or things to do as the other beaches.

IMG_7598

Moreover, despite the amazing scenario that the restaurant provides, it also serves delicious food as well. The food is not seafood where you can find in the local restaurants on the beach but here, they use seafood into a main dish instead. Their highly recommended dish is the Salmon Pesto – pasta served with baked salmon is this spinach and basil sauce. The taste of the Salmon Pesto has the perfect combination of savory flavor, it is not too thick and not too light and also the pasta itself is perfectly boiled; no doubt on why it is highly recommended by the restaurant.

IMG_7600

The next dish I ordered was Prawn Omelet on Rice. I would not recommend this dish compared to the Pesto as you can get this menu elsewhere with similar taste and maybe cheaper price. The omelet itself was a little too dry but the prawns are alright. This dish would be more of a dish if you want something light and easy. The last menu is Stir-Fried Prawn with the restaurant’s sauce. For this dish you can see from the photo that it is full of big fresh prawns, which might be because the restaurant is right by the beach therefore it is easier for them to find fresh seafoods. The sauce is more like a tomato-based sauce with right amount of sweet and savory.

The price of each dish are around 100-300THB, which is not cheap but also not too expensive compared to the other restaurants around and for the quality of food you receive. For example, the prawn dish were around 220THB but the dish were filled with high quality prawns and the Pesto were around 150THB but were served with decent amount of salmon.

To wrap up, Brown, Brew & Bistro is a must-try restaurant when coming to Pranburi and is a nice place to hang out or to just chill in general. The only disadvantage of this restaurant is that it is closed every Wednesday, but other than that is it opened everyday from 08.00AM-20.00PM. I suggest coming here on a weekend would be perfect for a weekend getaway but going on weekdays might as well avoid the traffic on the road and the crowd in the restaurant as well.

Address: 6/42, Pak Nam Pran, Pranburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan 77000

Opening Hours: 08.00AM-20.00PM

ThongYoy Cafe

Faded Fall

What is Cafe? In Thailand “Cafe” is known as stores that sells bakeries, desserts, drinks and sometime lunches. Most cafes are decorated beautifully for photos that are worth it for Instagram, which is what people focus on most when they search for cafes as most of the targeted consumer are teenagers at the age of 16-25. Some cafes are even themed and have their own signature looks, such as some might be decorated in certain colors and some might have outstanding featured that could be their selling point. To summarize, Cafes are basically coffee shops that are nicely decorated and with a variety of menu.

Cafe in Thailand is a very popular thing for a big range of teenagers which makes it easy to find one, in fact you could find a cafe almost everywhere around the corner especially in the city such as on Sukhumvit road or Siam. Although cafes are mostly in the city, there are a lot of nice cafes in the other area as well such as the one I will be talking about in this article. In this article I will show you one of the most unique cafes in Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, and if you’re wondering how is it unique then let’s get in detail!

Thongyoy Cafe

Thongyoy Cafe is a cafe located in Rama VI Road in Bangkok, Thailand. As I mentioned above, Thongyoy Cafe is a very unique cafe because not only that is decorated in a relaxing and calming atmosphere, but it also sells Thai desserts while other cafes are mostly more into pastries and bakeries such as cake. In Thongyoy Cafe you will find locations to take photos, Thai desserts in beautiful tableware that you won’t be able to find anywhere else and an amazing atmosphere.

Faded Fall (1)

If you are looking for a place that assure you will get good photos then Thongyoy Cafe is the cafe you’re looking for. It is decorated mostly in a pinkish-orange tone with a tint of green from their plants. Also, one of their signature spots that almost every person who comes here have to have a shot with is their amazingly beautiful flower background; a wall full of flowers in a bright tone. With the small decorations in the cafe, they used the color white and gold in everything from chairs to tableware. They uses the color gold with all the tableware which enhances their desserts and made the desserts looks classy.

Faded Fall (3)

In most of the cafes people would not expect much from the food because their goal is to get photos so most of the cafes would put their efforts into decoration rather than the taste of their food, but not in Thongyoy Cafe. In Thongyoy Cafe not only that you will get great photos from their beautiful decoration, but you will also receive great food. The taste of their Thai desserts are not too sweet and not too bland. It gives the right amount of sweetness and also does not taste artificial like some other Thai desserts that you could taste more from the sugar than from their natural ingredients.

Thongyoy Cafe has a signature dish which is their set of Thai desserts coming in five little bowls, two soda pops, and a plate of nuts and fruits. As stated above that the desserts in this cafe has the perfect taste for a Thai dessert, the drinks are not bad as well. For the drinks, it gives a sour and sweet taste and with the soda mixed, it’s very refreshing.

Faded Fall (2)

Not only does this cafe gives you all the needs you’re looking for, it also gives great facilities and services. Thongyoy Cafe is included with two floors which mean you do not need to worry about the cafe being too crowded or not having enough space because the cafe is big enough to fill their customers. Also, it has a parking space nearby which you could easily walk to and from the cafe, meaning you could bring you car as well. For the location you could simply type “Thongyoy Cafe” into Google Maps and it will show you the directions to the cafe directly, or for the quicker and easier way you could go by the skytrain (BTS) and get off at “Ari” Station as well.

Thongyoy Cafe is not only just a ordinary cafe in my opinion as other than a cafe for people to hang out at, taking photos and chilling out with friends, but it also could be a tourist spot because where can you find a place that develop Thai food into a more modern way? Moreover, Thongyoy Cafe opens from 7AM-9PM and from weekday to weekend, so customers do not have to rush and could spend as much time as they want in this cafe.

Location: 88/2 Rama 6 Khwaeng Samsen Nai, Khet Phaya Thai, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10400
